The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club boasts a strong, varied and competitive sailing division in conjunction with the largest Youth Development Program in Australia. The local conditions are highly suited to trailer sailor style designs and the senior competitive activities are heavily represented by this class of boats, especially our substantial fleet of very competitive Blazer 23 class yachts along with Hartley, Farr and RL24.

Our Youthsail Program is a very special part of our club and we pride ourselves on the resources and expertise we are able to offer and In return our young sailors have very successfully represented the club at regional, state and international level and have a proud record of achievement.

Our main club competitions occur every second Saturday afternoon from 1pm in a number of series running all year long. Members also compete annually in major Queensland premiere events like the Bay to Bay, Surf to City, Pearl Challenge, Sail Mooloolaba and St Helena Cup predominantly from September to May each year. There is also a winter series running every three or four weeks during the winter months.

Overview

Back in the 1950’s a small group of dedicated sailors were unknowingly laying the foundations for the now Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club. As the Noosa River Sailing Club they had their first clubhouse, which was opened in September 1961 by the Chairman of Noosa Shire Council, S. Adams, and the Commodore, W. Hayter.

With the growing number of sailors the clubhouse was extended and the Club’s name changed to the Noosa Yacht Club.

At the same time, rowers were a big user of the Noosa River with their storage at Munna Point. In 1981 the Noosa Rowing Club was formed and members were looking for permanent storage and clubhouse.

After many attempts to join up with the Noosa Yacht Club, agreement was finally reached and the Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club was incorporated in February 1984.

Don Reed, a sailor in the 1950’s of the Noosa River Sailing Club; and Dr. Nick Kahl of Noosa Rowing Club, along with Simon Newcomb and Billy Griffiths, secured the river site which in turn became the current Club site.

After many years of hard work by a group of dedicated volunteers, the go-ahead was given by Government and Council to start work on our new clubhouse.

After a lot of hard work, sweat and tears, the first sod of the new site was turned by Noel Playford and Peter D’Arcey, the Noosa Shire Council Chairman and Club Vice Commodore and Hon. Treasurer respectively.

Ron Slinn, Construction Manager, and Ron Scholes, Building Contractor, correctly predicted Easter 1994 for completion of one of the most ambitious projects in the Club’s history.

On the first of April 1994, the sailors and rowers sailed past both the old clubhouse and the new clubhouse. At the Club’s Grand Opening, the Regional Manager of Queensland Department of Tourism, Sport and Racing, Steve Hoban, had the honour of cutting the ribbon to officially open the clubhouse, along with the Commodore John Sheriff and the Hon. Secretary, Bruce Whitfield.

Ever since that Easter Saturday in 1994, the Club has grown progressively in size and membership.

It has also developed the best children’s sailing program in Queensland and has a disabled sailing program held in equally high regard.
